In the beginning of the Fall season, I was looking for some orange inks to get my journal ready for the Fall mood. Something that made me think of the leaves turning and cozy tea curled up with the cats. Inkdependence Mike was swatching oranges on Twitch one day late in September and one of those was Taccia Ukiyo-e Koiame. I quickly bought a sample and patiently (or not so much) waited for October 1st to ink it up in my TWSBI Eco with a medium nib.
Taccia Ukiyo-e Koiame is part of Taccia's Ukiyo-e series 1 inks. From the Taccia website 'The Ukiyo-e is a Japanese printing established in the Edo-period(17th century) to feature the life style, trend and play by the people of the time.' Each color has been supervised by a color consultant in Japan.
I absolutely love this color. Immediately it was THE color I was looking for. The color is a dark reddish-orange. It has a wet flow coming from the medium nibbed Eco and beautiful shading and nice saturation. I looked forward to everyday that I got to use this color.
The chromatography strips shows a mix of grey, light pink, purple, super light brown (unless my eyes are playing tricks on me) orange and some yellow around the edges. This was something that I absolutely did not expect to see coming from this color. This is a really complex color.
I did small writing samples on Apica, Travelers, Mnemosyne, Rhodia, Tomoe, Clairefontaine. There was a little feathering on the Rhodia, which I was surprised and heavier swatch came through the Apica.
Longer writing samples were done on Tomoe 68gsm and Iroful.
Overall this has been one of my favorite inks I’ve found so far. I love the color, the slight shading on some papiers. Everyday using this color was a joy. I think it’s going to stick around through November too.
